Would you dare to jump through a window to the past?

Time Sight by Lynne Jonell

Hey bookwyrms!

How do you feel about going on a trip through time with me? If you choose to go, you have to be ready for danger around every corner. And I can’t guarantee that we’ll make it back in one piece. You ready? Good!

The first stop on our tour is present-day Scotland, where the River Lyon (pronounced Lion) meets the River Tay. Once we arrive, we’ll meet up with Will Menzies (sounds more like Mengis), his brother Jamie, and his cousin Nan at the old family castle. That’s where the fun begins in Time Sight a new middle grade adventure by Lynne Jonell!

Is it real or is it an illusion?

When a late-night call comes in saying Will’s mother is in trouble overseas, Will’s dad wastes no time in leaping into action. He purchase a couple of plane tickets for the boys to make sure they have somewhere safe to stay while he goes to free his wife, but he has no idea that the book he buys for five-year-old Jamie holds the key to open windows to the past.

The first time Will notices the strange shimmer hovering just over the top of his brother’s Magic Eye book, a single cobnut (also known as an acorn) rolls out of the past and into the present. The second time he attempts to look through the window, it snaps closed right after Jamie darts to the other side to help another little boy who looks like he’s in serious trouble!.

With time working against him, Will has to learn how to master his new-found ability, try to find and rescue his brother, and help set time back to rights after their many brushes against history….because Medieval Scotland isn’t the only time they’ll end up in, and the dangers they’ll face are far from imaginary.

Is it an adventure tale? Or something all together different?

I’ll leave that decision completely up to you! I will say that Time Sight is packed full of imagination and history. One of my favorite things about the book is that Lynne Jonell shares a little bit about her family history (she’s also part of Clan Menzies) and about the different peoples and cultures that have lived on the land where the children’s adventure takes place throughout history. After you finish, you might even find yourself checking out books from the library so you can learn even more!

Time Sight is a longer book, coming in at almost 400 pages, and some of the words might be a little bit challenging for some young readers. But those who dare to travel through its pages will not be disappointed. I’m giving the book 5 spicy dark chocolate eggs because it makes difficult concepts like time travel and history accessible to readers of all ages. It also has strong themes about family and standing up for what is right, no matter how dark things look at the moment.

And that’s a reminder we can all use in our present time. Happy reading!
